TLC vehicle licenses renewing December 2026 and January 2027
Drivers and vehicle owners whose for-hire vehicle licenses expire in those two months need a current insurance certificate on file before TLC will renew the vehicle license. This page uses the same NYC Open Data pull as the fleet stats page. Data pull October 9, 2026. It does not offer DMV or TLC services, and it does not show a price.
Vehicle licenses expiring in those months
On the active for-hire list, 4,324 vehicle licenses expire in December 2026 and 3,525 expire in January 2027. The same months are listed on the NYC TLC fleet stats page. These are vehicle licenses, not driver licenses.
The FH-1 at renewal
On TLC’s Renew a For-Hire Vehicle License page, the documents include a current for-hire insurance certificate (FH-1) in the applicant’s name when that certificate is expired. TLC also says the vehicle license cannot be renewed without a current policy that meets TLC’s minimums. The minimums are on TLC’s vehicle insurance page. The insurer files the FH-1. This website does not file certificates and does not submit renewal applications.
NY DMV’s for-hire insurance requirements page describes an FH-1 or FH-1B for for-hire registration, except for exempt buses and ambulances. For-hire registrations last one year. DMV says taxi and livery classes do not present the certificate at registration renewal because the dates are staggered, and that a current certificate still has to be kept in the vehicle. DMV also says a lapse on for-hire registrations is a 30-day revocation of the registration and the plates. A quote on this site does not replace that filing.
More on the certificate itself is in the FH-1 guide.
Timing
TLC says a completed renewal, with the required documents, should be submitted at least 30 days before the vehicle license expires. If the expiration date passes, TLC says there are 60 more days to finish the requirements. During that time the license stays expired until TLC approves the late renewal. Start a quote early enough that the carrier can put a current FH-1 on file before the 30-day mark.
TLC also says a renewing vehicle must pass a New York State Department of Transportation inspection and that the inspection report has to be current. Vehicles registered outside New York have to submit a current DMV registration. Those steps are TLC’s, not services offered here.
Questions
Do these counts include TLC driver licenses?
No. The counts are active for-hire vehicle licenses on the NYC TLC list, grouped by the vehicle expiration month. They are not a count of driver licenses.
What insurance proof does TLC ask for at vehicle renewal?
TLC’s renewal page says a vehicle license cannot be renewed without a current policy that meets TLC minimums, and it asks for a current for-hire insurance certificate (FH-1) in the applicant’s name when that certificate is expired. The insurer files the FH-1. This site does not file it.
When should the quote be started?
TLC says a renewal application should be submitted at least 30 days before the vehicle license expires. Start the insurance quote early enough for the carrier to file a current FH-1 before that date.
